White Card Construction Induction: Why Every Site in Melbourne Asks For It
The General Construction Induction Card is the floor for any construction site in Australia. The training, where to obtain it, and the role-specific add-ons builders expect.

Anyone who works on or visits a construction workplace in Australia must hold a General Construction Induction Card - the 'White Card'. It is mandated by the model Work Health and Safety Regulations and enforced in Victoria under the OHS Act.
What the training covers
The CPCWHS1001 'Prepare to work safely in the construction industry' unit teaches new entrants the basics of the safety system: PPE, hazard identification, emergency response and incident reporting. It is delivered face-to-face or via an approved blended-learning RTO and takes around one day.
Where to obtain it
Any RTO with CPCWHS1001 on scope can issue the card. WorkSafe Victoria maintains a list of approved providers. Avoid 'one-hour online' offers - they do not meet the regulatory standard and the resulting card is invalid.
Role-specific add-ons
- Working at heights (for any task above two metres).
- Confined spaces (for tank, pit or vessel work).
- Asbestos awareness (for sites with potential asbestos-containing materials).
- Traffic management for shadow boards or live-traffic interfaces.
Verification is on the host
Builders are required to sight the White Card at induction. RELAY Labour Hire captures a copy on file before any construction placement and re-issues an electronic copy to the host before first attendance. Lost cards can be replaced through the issuing RTO.
